How do you rate the movie “Munich”?
Many people commented that this movie was heavy, depressing, and boring. In fact, it should have been a good story with a rhythm as exciting as “Mission Impossible” but an extremely cruel theme.
If we go back to that period of history, perhaps we can experience the cruelty and magnificence of this “Revenge of God”.
“An eye for an eye, blood for blood.”
Never underestimate a country’s determination.
At 4 a.m. on January 22, 1979, in the “Ruweiden district” where the upper class of Beirut, the capital of Lebanon, lives, Ali Hassan Salama was awakened from a nightmare again while lying alone on the bed in his villa.
Although he could feel the cold sweat on his back sticking to the bed sheet, making it itchy and uncomfortable, Salaman still didn’t dare to move in the dark. Instead, he squinted his eyes silently, his ears trembling slightly as if nervously, and nervously searched for movement outside the window:
The nightingales in the woods in the distance were still singing slowly, proving that there were no snipers hiding in the woods. Very good…
The window frames of the neighboring houses were blown by the wind, making a rustling sound, proving that every window was closed intact, very good…
The villa yard was completely silent, with only the sound of his bodyguards patrolling, one footstep every two seconds, one footstep every two seconds, steady and regular, with no other unfamiliar footsteps, very good…
He waited for another 5 minutes, and then a faint whistle came from far away outside the window.
Very good! Safe!
Salaman finally breathed a sigh of relief. It was the secret sentry he had placed at a high place far away from the villa, which would whistle to report safety every fifteen minutes.
He finally dared to move his body carefully. Although the thick blackout curtains on the windows blocked all light sources and his body outline would not be exposed even with the lights on, Salaman still chose to get out of bed in the dark, walked cautiously to the bedroom door along the load-bearing wall in the room, and knocked gently on the door twice.
The heavy bulletproof door was opened, and the expressionless bodyguard walked in. He was used to his master being awakened in the early hours of the morning, so he didn’t say a word, but silently took out his pistol and stood guard outside the bathroom.
Salaman then turned on the light in the bathroom, walked in, turned on the shower and started to take a shower. Since October 1972, he has been living like this for 6 years. From Germany, Spain, Norway, Jordan to Lebanon, he has been displaced like a stray dog in these 6 years, but he never dared to relax his vigilance. It is precisely because of this caution that he has been able to escape the enemy’s pursuit for 5 consecutive times in the past 6 years.
But he didn’t know how long he could hold out.
For 6 years, he was always on edge. Whenever a stranger approached him within 50 meters, the hair on his back would stand on end. He had to wait for the bodyguards to sit on the bed and sofa in the hotel before he dared to sit. He had to wait for the bodyguards to eat all the food before he dared to eat. Even when he returned to the relative safety of his home, he would either suffer from insomnia or be suddenly awakened in the early morning. Even if he fell asleep, it was not necessarily a good dream, because his dreams were full of explosions, body parts, and black gun muzzles pointing at him…
Even so… being alive for 6 years is still something worth celebrating…
Salaman laughed silently in the shower water: Yes! I am still alive! Even if I live as humble as a snake in a mud hole, I am still alive! Those who call themselves God, come and take my life if you have the guts!
3:30 p.m. is the time to go out once a day.
As usual, the heavy door was opened, and the two bodyguards stepped out first, and then the door was tightly closed. A minute later, the two bodyguards who had left first gave a signal to get in position, and Salaman opened the door again, and walked quickly towards the special car at the street corner, surrounded by several personal bodyguards.
But this time, they were a little different. Not long after they walked out of their front door, they heard someone calling Salaman’s name in a tender voice from the upstairs next to them. Hearing the call, Salaman’s body tensed up and he subconsciously jumped to the side. The bodyguards around him also grabbed their weapons at the same time.
Salaman looked up and saw a charming girl waving at him from the second-floor window of the villa next to his house. Salaman relaxed. This beauty named Penelope was not a stranger, but an old acquaintance who had lived next door to him for a long time. She had settled here before he moved to Beirut. Every time he went out, he could see her painting on the lawn of her house with a drawing board.
“Mr. Ali, can you do me a favor? I forgot my picture album in the car and I’m too lazy to get it. Can you help me throw it up?” The neighbor named Penelope was waving a thing that looked like a car remote control in her hand, pointing at the car parked in front of her door with anticipation.
Salaman smiled slightly. He was sure that this beautiful woman seemed to have some affection for him. She had given him a painting she had drawn before, and he gave her wine in return. In this kind of depressing life where he could hardly breathe every day, if he could have a romantic relationship with this foreign woman, it would be the best way to relieve stress…
After confirming that the car was only about ten steps away from him and that the surroundings were clear and there were no suspicious people ambushing, Salaman bowed slightly and said gentlemanly: “I am happy to serve you, ma’am.”
He walked quickly to the side of the Volkswagen sedan and saw through the car window a picture album on the back seat. Salaman opened the car door and was about to reach for the album when he suddenly felt his blood run cold – the cover of the album was a group photo of the Israeli delegation at the 1972 Munich Olympics!
The back seat of the car under the album had been completely removed, and replaced with densely packed explosives, which weighed at least several dozen kilograms. The detonators on the explosives were flashing lights.
Above her head, Penelope’s voice was still charming: “Did you see clearly? Mr. Ali Hassan Salaman!”
Salaman looked up in panic, stammering in fear, “I don’t understand… Madam, I haven’t hurt you… We have been living in peace for so long, why suddenly…”
“Because I just ended my ‘hibernation’ a month ago, sir,” Nirope slowly pressed the remote control in her hand, “Mossad represents all the innocent souls of Munich and will send you to hell!”
The directional bomb released all its huge explosive power on Salaman’s side. The shock wave swept from the roadside to the other side of the road, killing all four of Salaman’s bodyguards. The residual power also caused four deaths and 18 injuries to passers-by in the surrounding area.
Salaman, who was at the center of the explosion, was blown to pieces. The last thing he was aware of in this world was an Israeli smiling at him.
Going back more than 6 years, that was the most glorious moment in Ali Hassan Salamane’s life.
Under his careful planning, members of the extremist faction of the Palestine Liberation Organization, “Black September”, successfully sneaked into the Munich Olympic Village on September 5, while the 1972 Munich Olympics was in progress, and took 11 Israeli athletes hostage. Once the news was announced, it immediately attracted worldwide attention.
“Black September” originated from the Palestine Liberation Organization (hereinafter referred to as “PLO”) established in the Palestinian refugee camps in Jordan. After its establishment, the PLO continued to cross the border to Israel to carry out terrorist activities, causing serious instability in both Israel and Jordan. Therefore, in September 1970, the King of Jordan decided to use the army to completely expel the PLO from Jordan. In the process of expulsion, the Jordanian army inevitably caused a certain degree of civilian casualties in the Palestinian refugee camps, which is known as the “Black September Incident” in history. So the extreme faction in the PLO established the “Black September” organization and began to frantically plan terrorist activities to retaliate.
From 1970 to 1972, “Black September” planned a series of terrorist activities, including hijacking flights, attacking embassies, and setting off explosives in downtown areas. However, the most influential event was the successful hostage-taking during the global Olympic Games.
Seeing that the eyes of the whole world were focused on “Black September”, Salaman, who was remotely controlling the operation from afar, was so excited that he could hardly contain himself. He raised the conditions for the hostage exchange all the way to 11 hostages in exchange for 250 members of the “Jihad Organization” detained in Israeli prisons.
The West German government and police, who were clearly ill-prepared for the emergency, also became accomplices in “Black September”. The West German government first rejected the Israeli government’s request to suspend the Olympics and send special forces from Israel to West Germany to participate in the rescue of the hostages. Then the West German police made a major mistake in the rescue operation, which ultimately led to the failure of the rescue and the death of all 11 Israeli hostages.
Although the hostages in his hands were not successfully exchanged, and the eight terrorists sent out to hold the hostages were all shot dead, this act of “touching the trouble” still made Salaman and “Black September” famous. Salaman was given the title of “Red Prince” in the “terrorist circle”, and “Black September” also jumped into one of the most famous terrorist organizations in the world.
But neither Salaman nor the members of the “Black September” organization had imagined that soon after they thought they had reached the “peak of their lives”, they would all be consumed by the rage they had caused, and would disappear from this world without leaving a trace.
The source of that anger is “God”.
After the Munich massacre, Israel was in mourning. At the state funeral for the 11 athletes on September 6, Prime Minister Golda Meir, who was always known as the “Iron Lady,” was too sad to attend.
But three days later, when Mrs. Meir made her next public appearance, the grief of the whole of Israel had been replaced by the rage of revenge. Mrs. Meir publicly stated in her speech that she had signed a warrant for the “Black September” terrorists: “In Munich, Jews were kidnapped and massacred on one side, while people were watching sports events on the other side. When Jews carried the coffins of the victims back to their homeland, the Olympic torch was still burning. Jews are always alone. No one will protect us. Only Jews can protect themselves!”
After the speech, Mrs. Meir returned backstage and almost immediately met with Zamir, the head of Israel’s Mossad, who had returned from Europe overnight.
As the world’s leading intelligence agency, “Mossad” means “agency” in Hebrew. In fact, its official name should be “Israel Intelligence and Special Operations Agency”, and its main business is to collect and analyze intelligence. But what makes “Mossad” famous all over the world is its “sideline” – overseas special operations.
Compared with the CIA, a “giant” with more than 20,000 official agents, Mossad is limited by Israel’s population and national strength and can only take the “short and powerful” elite route. The number of official agents has always been kept within 1,500, and most of them are engaged in intelligence analysis and processing at the headquarters.
Therefore, in order to make up for its lack of mobility, especially overseas mobility, Mossad has created a unique “dormant” system. This system is actually to disperse many excellent agents trained by Mossad to lurk around the world for a long time. Usually, these extraordinary agents work, live, and even get married and have children like ordinary people. Many of them will not participate in any operations for several years or even more than ten years. Once Israel’s national interests are seriously threatened, Mossad will quietly send a senior agent from its headquarters, and then “wake up” several lurking agents in the local area to form a team to launch overseas special operations unexpectedly.
This “sleep-wake” mode of action brings the suddenness of Mossad’s actions to the extreme. Opponents are often caught off guard and are simply impossible to defend against.
Now, Mrs. Meir, on behalf of the Israeli government, authorized Zamir to use all “dormant” agents of Mossad during the operation. The operation has no time limit and will not end until all the perpetrators of the Munich Massacre and the entire “Black September” organization are eliminated at all costs.
Finally, Mrs. Meir personally presented a Bible to Zamir as a token of trust, indicating that from now on, Israel will “return an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.”
From then on, Zamir named the entire revenge plan “The Wrath of God”, and the revenge of an entire country began.
Thanks to the Mossad’s superb intelligence gathering work, Zamir only waited for 4 days to get the list of all members of the “Black September” who participated in the Munich Massacre. After communicating with Mrs. Meir and other senior Israeli government officials, the Mossad finally determined the death list of 11 people, which was exactly the same as the number of Israeli athletes who died in the Munich Massacre, demonstrating Israel’s creed of “an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth”.
In response to the people on the death list, Zamir cautiously “woken up” only about 15 agents to gather in Jerusalem, forming a core action team he called the “Death Commando”. Behind this action team there is an auxiliary team of forty to fifty people providing logistical support – short and powerful has always been the purpose of Israeli spy operations.
Before the operation, each member of the Death Squad submitted an application to Zamir to voluntarily withdraw from the Mossad. On the one hand, this means that the Death Squad will not be restricted by any national laws or international conventions during the operation, and no matter how much trouble they make for revenge, it has nothing to do with Israel; on the other hand, it also means that once the members of the Death Squad are arrested, they will not be protected by any country or organization. Israel will only “donate” huge pensions to their families in the name of “humanitarianism”, but will no longer be able to guarantee their own safety.
Despite setting out in such a way that almost cut off their own retreat, Zamir still made the simplest “three rules” with the Death Commandos as the final bottom line of this revenge:
Revenge only on the person concerned, without harming their relatives, wives, and children;
After killing a terrorist, do not desecrate the body;
Try not to cause harm to innocent people.
On September 25, the Death Squad completed all preparations and officially launched the “Wrath of God” operation. Inspired by the Bible given by Mrs. Meir, Zamir imaginatively named the specific action plan after the “Seven Deadly Sins” of mankind recorded in the Bible, to indicate that the Death Squad was judging the members on the death list on behalf of God.
The first person to be tried for the “Seven Deadly Sins” was number 4 on the death list, Vael Zwart, nicknamed “The Poet”. He was believed to be the head of “Black September” in Italy and provided transportation, communications and financial support for the Munich Massacre.
After the Munich Massacre, knowing that Israel had publicly announced that “blood debt must be repaid with blood”, this core member of “Black September” who was quite famous in Italy did not choose to hide, but still lived in his home in the center of Rome.
On October 16, 1972, just about five weeks after the Munich massacre, Zwart was found dead downstairs of his home with 14 bullet wounds. A bunch of black mandala flowers and a card were placed on his body, with the words “We never forget, we never forgive” written in Hebrew on the card. The black mandala flower has since become one of the main symbols of the Death Squad.
The most ridiculous thing in this operation was the Roman police. After the thunderous action of the Death Squad, the Roman police found nothing suspicious and finally determined that Zwart had committed suicide…
This tragic “suicide” method terrified the other members of “Black September”. They began to realize that Israel’s death threats were not just talk. They began to hide everywhere, but “Mossad” quickly locked on the second target of trial, Mohammed Hamshari, number 11 on the list.
This underground arms dealer has been engaged in arms transactions with terrorist organizations such as “Black September”. Most of the arms used by terrorists in the Munich Massacre were provided by him.
After Zwart was assassinated, Hamshari fled to Paris with his wife and children to avoid disaster, but his businessman nature made him continue to engage in arms trading, so his whereabouts were soon tracked down by Mossad.
At the end of November 1972, the “Death Commandos” came to Paris. One of the agents disguised himself as a member of the Italian Mafia and kept spreading news in the Paris underground market that he was going to purchase large quantities of weapons for his family.
The greedy Hamshari really took the bait and took the initiative to invite the agent to his home for a detailed discussion. As a result, the agent, with the help of peripheral personnel, took advantage of Hamshari’s toilet time and secretly placed a miniature high-powered bomb under the receiver of his telephone.
On December 7, 1972, after making sure that Hamshari’s wife and children had left home, the agent who had been discussing business with Hamshari called Hamshari’s home and asked, “Excuse me, is this Mr. Hamshari?”
After hearing the clear voice “Yes, I am”, the agent pressed the remote control of the miniature bomb…
The arms dealer, who had lived his whole life on the edge of a knife, had half of his face blown off. He died in agony after lingering in the hospital for more than a month. On the day he died, his wife found a bunch of black datura flowers in front of their house…
Faced with the continuous and efficient assassinations of the “Death Commandos”, the desperate “Black September” also tried to fight back.
Person No. 6 on the death list – Kamali Nasser, the think tank of “Black September”, person No. 7 – Kamali Adwin, the commander of “Black September” who carried out terrorist activities in Israel, and person No. 9 – Mohammed Youssef, the direct commander of the Munich Massacre, have returned to the headquarters of “Black September” in Beirut one after another and began to command members of “Black September” to cross the border and carry out retaliatory actions in Israel.
As the press officer of Black September, Kamali Nasser even publicly shouted to Mossad: “We are right here, in Beirut! If you have the guts, send your special agent team to die! We have thousands of excellent fighters here, and we can strangle all of you to death with our bare hands!”
But soon, Nasser found that he had underestimated the power of the Death Squad. Behind that team of only a dozen agents was not just a team of forty or fifty people, but had the information and technology of the entire Mossad, countless “dormant agents” and the support of Jews all over the world.
Within 15 hours, the number of agents who were “awakened” and the hired and peripheral personnel that these agents usually controlled suddenly increased to nearly 300. In the enemy’s land, “Mossad” suddenly conjured up a special forces with light and heavy weapons.
This “Death Commando PLUS” was divided into 8 military vehicles and rushed directly to the “Black September” headquarters at lightning speed. The “Black September” was caught off guard and was at a disadvantage in both numbers and equipment in its home field. More than 100 people were killed on the spot, and even the headquarters building was blown up.
By the time the Lebanese military reacted and dispatched troops to stop the attack, the Death Squad had already “completed their transformation” and had broken up and left the scene.
After this battle, the psychological defenses of the members of “Black September” completely collapsed, and the core members fled one after another. “Black September” was almost dead in name only. However, the pursuit of “Mossad” was still orderly and followed them.
In April 1973, Bashir Kubaisi, nicknamed “Doctor”, the fifth person on the death list, publicly appeared in Paris, believing that he had received protection from the United States and the Soviet Union, especially the Soviet intelligence system.
On April 6, 1973, Kubaisi stopped at a crossroads in downtown Paris, even though he had already discovered someone was following him. He turned his head and looked at the Death Squad agents who were following him with contempt: “You are responsible for your country for what you have done!”
The agent who followed him shot Kubaisi 11 times in front of the Soviet agent next to him: “I am only responsible to God now, Doctor.”
Almost at the same time, Hussein Alishil, number 10 on the death list, also met God in Cyprus.
In June 1973, Mohammed Budma, number 8 on the death list, was killed in a car bomb.
At this point, less than 9 months after the Munich Massacre, the thundering attack of Mossad not only made the people No. 4 to No. 11 on the death list all accept “God’s punishment”, but even the once powerful “Black September” organization had become dead in name only.
The next thing to do is to track down the culprit.
At this time, the top three figures on the death list had become frightened birds and hid without a trace. It was not until October 1977 that Mossad discovered through its intelligence network that Wadi Haddad, the third figure on the death list, was hiding in a private residence in Baghdad, Iraq, and had been living a secluded life.
At that time, Israel and Iraq had poor diplomatic relations, and it was difficult for Israelis to enter Iraq legally. Moreover, Iraq was under the rule of the Arab Socialist Baath Party, and the domestic situation was relatively stable, so it was difficult for foreign forces to fight like they did in Lebanon.
Just when they were at a loss, the intelligence analysis department of Mossad made a remarkable contribution: by analyzing the shopping lists of the servants of the house where Haddad was hiding for a year, they found that Haddad seemed to have a special liking for chocolate and would buy it every time. But in Baghdad at that time, high-end chocolate made in Western countries was definitely a luxury.
The Palestinian businessman soon opened a store in downtown Baghdad specializing in selling Western desserts, and after the store opened, he specially gave Haddad a gift of expensive Belgian chocolate.
Haddad was originally worried about not being able to find his favorite chocolate in Baghdad, so he was naturally overjoyed when he saw that his fellow countrymen had brought the chocolate to his door. Although for the sake of caution, Haddad did not eat the chocolate sent by the Palestinian merchant for the first time, but gave it to his servant. However, after seeing that the servant did not feel any discomfort after eating the chocolate, Haddad immediately asked his servant to list this dessert shop as a must-buy store every time he purchases.
After happily eating high-end chocolates from all over the world for two months, people around him noticed that Haddad began to lose weight day by day, and finally fell ill. His subordinates hurriedly invited experts from Palestine to treat Haddad, but several of the most famous Palestinian medical experts repeatedly checked and found no signs of poisoning. They were surprised to find that Haddad’s immune system was completely destroyed, and all the symptoms were very similar to leukemia, but the treatment plan for leukemia was ineffective.
In March 1978, after struggling for four months, Hadda finally died in great pain. In the end, the official Palestinian cause of death was still leukemia.
It was not until after Haddad’s funeral that the servant who was responsible for buying food for him occasionally passed by the dessert shop and found that the shop was already empty. A bunch of withered black mandsura was stuck on the sign at the door…
In the process of assassinating the “Red Prince” Ali Hassan Salama, who was at the top of the blacklist, the Mossad and the Death Squad suffered a rare setback.
First, in July 1973 in Norway, members of the Death Squad let the real murderer go during an operation, and instead mistakenly killed an innocent waiter who looked like Salaman, resulting in the arrest of six Mossad agents by Norwegian police. After the news came out, international public opinion accused Israel of killing innocent people in its retaliation. From then on, the United States, the Soviet Union and other countries began to organize protection for some members on the death list, which invisibly made Mossad’s subsequent revenge plan much more difficult.
Then in 1976, the Death Squad agents had completely surrounded Salaman and his assistant, Abu Daoud, number two on the death list, but the two managed to break through at the risk of their lives.
Although Salman was shot five times, he still managed to escape and ran back to his lair in Beirut and lived in seclusion. Daoud disappeared completely from the sight of Mossad.
In the end, Zamir had to expand the scope of “awakening” and transferred Penelope, who had been lurking in Beirut for a long time, back to Beirut from Germany, which led to the scene at the beginning of this article.
On August 1, 1981, nine years after the Munich Massacre, in a dilapidated hotel in Athens, Greece, Abu Daoud, the last person on the death list, was nervously urging his wife to pack up.
Since escaping from the siege of Mossad in 1976, Daoud has been living a wandering life for the past five years, moving back and forth between Eastern and Central European countries, and moving immediately if he finds anything suspicious.
Just half an hour ago, when he was walking down the hotel stairs, he found that a young man who was about to go upstairs suddenly turned around and went downstairs after seeing him. He was keenly aware that he was exposed.
“Hurry up, leave here before dark! Otherwise…” Daoud found that his wife was suddenly staring at the door and didn’t move. He turned his head and saw that the door had been opened quietly. Several men with stern faces were standing at the door. His legs softened and he fell to the bed with his wife.
“No! Please…” Seeing one of the men picked up Daud and threw him into the bathroom like an eagle catching a chick, Daud’s wife couldn’t help sobbing and began to beg for mercy.
“Don’t worry, ma’am.” A man who looked like a commander helped Daoud’s wife up, his tone unusually kind, “We have a discipline before we take action. We will only avenge the person himself and will not harm relatives, wives and children.”
Daoud’s wife felt a little relieved. At this time, low but slow gunshots began to be heard from the bathroom. It seemed that the gunman was deliberately prolonging Daoud’s pain. There was at least two seconds between each shot. The gunshots, which were mostly weakened by the silencer, seemed cruel and elegant.
Daoud seemed to have his mouth strangled by a rope, and could only whimper with the sound of gunfire, 1 shot, 2 shots, 5 shots, 10 shots… The whimpering sound was intermittent, but the gunfire seemed like it would never stop, just ringing indifferently.
Daoud’s wife finally couldn’t bear it anymore. She pushed away the commander’s support and slid softly to the ground. She covered her ears with her hands and curled up into a ball, as if as long as she did this, all the cruelty in the outside world would disappear.
I don’t know how long it took, but the gunfire finally stopped. The smell of fresh blood and flesh mixed with the smell of gunpowder made people feel nauseous.
The commander leaned forward again and pulled up Daoud’s wife, who was curled up on the ground: “It’s all over, madam. You can go out and call the police now, or call the newspaper.
“Tell them, tell them, ma’am. Say that Daoud was shot 52 times by the Mossad before he died. Say that everyone on the death list has felt the wrath of God. Israel’s revenge is over.”
“What…what do you Israelis want?” Daoud’s wife, who was already on the verge of collapse, shook her head in pain. All she wanted now was to continue lying down.
What do we want?
The commander smiled slightly. Although he was the winner, his smile was somewhat sad. “We just want a guarantee of survival. We, the Jews in Israel, are a suffering nation. For thousands of years, we have no homeland and have been bullied by others. The Jews are always alone. No one will protect us. Only the Jews can protect themselves.
“We may not be able to guarantee the safety of every Jew, but we can guarantee that every Jew who has been hurt will be repaid with 10 times the pain!”
From October 1972 to September 1981, during the nine-year-long revenge operation, Mossad itself suffered heavy losses, and various terrorist organizations and unknown forces were constantly carrying out “counter-assassinations” against Mossad agents. According to data released by Israel, a total of four Israeli agents died in the entire “Wrath of God” operation. According to the memoirs written by Mossad insiders who participated in the revenge operation at the time, only two of the original members of the “Death Commando” when they assembled in Jerusalem finally returned to the country…
Although Mossad had a rule to “try not to harm innocent people” before the operation, passers-by were involved in the fighting between the two sides in many revenge operations, resulting in a large number of innocent civilian casualties.
Therefore, this revenge operation led by Israel’s Mossad has been receiving mixed reviews internationally. Many countries are even worried that Israel’s “blood for blood” style of action is actually exacerbating conflicts.
But we have to admit that it is Israel’s tough, even excessive national style that has secured the minimum survival guarantee for the Jews in the chaotic Middle East. When various forces are planning to attack Israel or the Jews, they will carefully consider whether they can escape the death pursuit of “Mossad” afterwards. Even the newly emerged ISIS in recent years, which has been rampant in the Middle East, killing crazily and causing terrorist incidents everywhere, has never dared to attack Israel so far.
To stop killing with killing, to stop war with war, this is the meaning of the existence of Mossad.
